AEO definition guide

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a brand and its content easy for AI answer systems to retrieve, understand, verify, summarize, and cite. It combines technical SEO, direct answers, clear entities, structured data, original evidence, and trusted references across the web.

Updated 10 minute guide

Short answerAEO is not a replacement for SEO and it is not a secret set of AI tags. It is a practical layer on top of search fundamentals: make the page indexable, answer a real question clearly, support claims with evidence, identify the entities involved, and earn corroboration from sources outside your own domain.

AEO means optimizing for the answer, not only the result

Traditional search gives a user a list of pages. Answer systems often synthesize several sources into one response, then name brands, quote claims, or attach links. AEO improves the chance that your page or brand is useful during that synthesis.

The important nuance is eligibility. Google says pages that support AI Overviews and AI Mode must already be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. It also says there is no separate technical requirement or special schema type for those features. This makes technical SEO the entry ticket, not a competing discipline.

A citable page makes a specific contribution. Original data, a clear definition, a transparent method, a useful comparison, or a first-hand example gives an answer system something distinct to reuse. Commodity summaries are much easier to replace.

How answer engines choose sources

Different products use different models and retrieval systems, but a useful working model has four stages. The process is not a published ranking formula. It is a way to diagnose where a brand is being lost.

01

Retrieve

Find candidate pages, entities, reviews, datasets, communities, and documents related to the question.

02

Evaluate

Compare relevance, freshness, source quality, consistency, and how directly each passage answers the question.

03

Synthesize

Combine useful claims into a concise response that fits the user's constraints and intent.

04

Cite or recommend

Attach supporting sources, mention brands, or recommend a short list when the system has enough confidence.

Google documents a related behavior called query fan-out, where AI features issue several searches across subtopics and data sources. That is why a complete topic cluster and well-connected supporting pages can outperform one oversized article.

AEO vs SEO: the foundation stays the same

DimensionSEOAEO

Unit of analysisKeyword, page, and SERP positionPrompt, passage, entity, source, and answer share
Content advantageRelevant, useful pages that satisfy search intentExtractable answers plus distinct evidence that can support a response

GEO, or generative engine optimization, overlaps heavily with AEO. Teams often use AEO when the goal is to become the direct answer and GEO when the goal is visibility inside a generated response. The execution usually shares the same foundation.

What to optimize for AEO

Technical

Stay crawlable and indexable

Serve the important content in HTML, use one canonical, keep internal links discoverable, and avoid accidental noindex or crawler blocks.

Answers

Lead with a complete response

Use question-led headings and answer the question in the first paragraph before expanding into examples and nuance.

Evidence

Publish something checkable

Add original data, methodology, dates, named sources, screenshots, or first-hand expert observations that another page cannot copy honestly.

Entities

Remove identity ambiguity

Keep the brand name, organization details, product names, profiles, and structured data consistent across owned and third-party sources.

Structure

Make passages stand alone

Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables so a useful section still makes sense when retrieved without the rest of the page.

Authority

Earn independent corroboration

Build real references from publications, customers, communities, directories, and experts that can verify what your own site claims.

Structured data helps describe visible content, but it should not invent facts or hide content from users. Likewise, an llms.txt file can be a useful optional index for agents, but it does not replace normal crawling, indexing, or authority.

How to measure AEO without vanity scores

Start with a fixed prompt set tied to buyer intent. Keep the wording, market, engine, and collection method stable enough to compare results over time. For every prompt, record whether the brand appeared, which URLs were cited, which competitors appeared, and what the answer said about each brand.

  1. Prompt coverage: the percentage of tracked buyer questions tested on schedule.
  2. Appearance rate: the percentage of prompts that mention the brand.
  3. Citation share: the brand's cited URLs divided by all citations in the tracked answer set.
  4. Source gap: frequently cited third-party pages that name competitors but not your brand.
  5. Business impact: AI referral sessions, assisted conversions, qualified opportunities, and revenue.

A single answer is not a trend. Generated responses vary, and systems change. Use a repeatable sample, preserve snapshots, and report uncertainty instead of treating an opaque score as a fact.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of making a brand and its content easy for AI-powered answer systems to retrieve, understand, verify, summarize, and cite.

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO builds on SEO. SEO earns discoverability in search indexes and results. AEO adds answer-first content, entity clarity, verifiable evidence, and measurement across generated answers. Strong technical SEO remains the foundation.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

The terms overlap. AEO emphasizes becoming the answer or recommendation. GEO, or generative engine optimization, emphasizes inclusion and citation inside generated responses. Most practical programs use the same technical, content, entity, and authority foundations.

Does schema markup guarantee an AI citation?

No. Structured data can clarify page type, authorship, organization details, and relationships, but it does not guarantee ranking or citation. The markup must also match the visible page.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AEO?

No. An llms.txt file can provide an optional agent-readable index, but Google explicitly says special AI text files are not required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Crawlability, indexability, useful content, and authority matter first.

How should AEO be measured?

Track a fixed set of buyer prompts, then measure brand mentions, cited URLs, citation share, competitor presence, sentiment, AI referral traffic, assisted conversions, and qualified pipeline over time.
